- In the past, people named theday "Chi Kou (赤口)", meaningpeople would probably quarrelon that day. So they usually donot visit each other.
- 3rd day(初三)
- 5th day(初五)This day is called Po Wu (破五),which means ridding the house of bad lucks. People will eatdumplings, and set offfirecrackers on this day.
- 7th day(初七)According to Chineselegends, Nüwa (女娲), thegoddess with snake body, created human beings onthe 7th day of the ChineseNew Year. So it is called“Human Day” or “Ren Ri (人日)”.
- 15th day(十五)It is the Lantern Festival andthe end of the Spring Festivalcelebration. On this day, people will enjoy different shapes oflanterns and guess lanternriddles, and sweet glutinousrice ball is a must-eat.
- Spring Festival TaboosWith good wishes cherished, people usually avoid unlucky behaviors during the Spring Festival. Inauspicious words like breaking, running out, death, ghost, killing, sickness, pain, losing, poverty etc. are not welcome.
- Lending and BorrowingDo not lend or borrow anything on the first day of lunar calendar, especially money. Lending money is an unlucky omen, which means economical loss, so people should not offend friends or neighbors by borrowing something from them.
- Empty Rice BarrelThe rice jar indicates people's living standards. If it gets empty, there may be some days of starvation waiting for them in the near future. So it is recommended to fill the rice jar to the brim before the New Year's Eve.
- BreakingNever break a bowl, plate, glass, vase, or mirror, because breaking may result in money loss in the future. If you unfortunately do break something, you may say "Sui Sui Ping An (岁岁平安)", which means safe and sound every year, after the 'breaking' to expel bad luck. Because the pronunciation of Chinese character "岁 (year, or Sui)" sounds the same as "碎 (broken, or Sui)."
- SweepingOn the first day of the New Year, it is a taboo to sweep the house or dump the trash. Otherwise, all the savings and valuables will be swept away. If it is really necessary, the house owner should start the sweeping from the outside to the inside of the house, which intimates collecting money.
