As a representative of outstanding culture in Shaanxi and even in Northwest China, Qinqiang Opera is one of the most distinctive local cultural landscapes in Shaanxi.

  • Qinqiang Opera, also known as "Bangzi Opera" and "Luantan Opera", is a traditional opera in northwest China. It originated from the Western Zhou Dynasty and matured in the Qin Dynasty. The performance skills of Qinqiang Opera are simple, rough, bold, full of exaggeration, with strong life atmosphere and rich skills.On May 20, 2006, Qinqiang Opera was approved by the State Council to be listed in the first batch of the State-Level Non-Material Cultural Heritage List.

  • According to legend, Li Longji, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, once set up the Liyuan specially to cultivate his singing children. Li Guinian, the musician of the Liyuan, was originally a folk artist in Shaanxi. The song "Prince Qin Breaking through the Enemy Array" composed by him is called Qinwang Opera, or Qinqiang Opera for short. This is probably the earliest Qinqiang music.

  • Roles: the roles of Qinqiang Opera are traditionally made up of four males, six females, two painted faces and one clown, each having a complete tone and procedure of performance.
  • Singing: it is the variation of the board style, that is, it takes a tune as the key tone and forms a series of different board style through the change of beat, rhythm, melody and speed, mainly including two parts: "board way" and "color cavity".
  • Language: the language of singing and speaking is based on the Guanzhong dialect of Shaanxi Province, and also integrates some poems, lyrics and songs of the Han and Tang Dynasties in China.

  • Facial makeup: drawing style is classical and unique, the system is complete, and Beijing Opera facial makeup, Sichuan Opera facial makeup and called China's three major facial makeup system.
  • Instrument: the main accompaniment instrument is banhu, with sharp and crisp pronunciation and a strong sense of rhythm.
  • Skills: commonly used have a trail horse, pull shelf, spit fire, blow ash, sweep the lamp, play fire stick, ceiling light, swivel chair and so on.

  • The repertoire of Qinqiang Opera includes myths, folk stories and various cases. It is rich in traditional repertoire, a total of 2,748 copies have been saved. Its popular repertoire includes "Three Drops of Blood", "Zhou Ren Return to the House", "Fifteen Strings Of Cash", "The Flame Colt", "Great Ascending Temple" and so on.
